Magnetic Fields in Young Galaxies

چکیده

We have studied the fate of initial magnetic fields in the hot halo gas out of which the visible parts of galaxies form, using threedimensional numerical MHD-experiments. The halo gas undergoes compression by several orders of magnitude in the subsonic cooling flow that forms the cold disk. The magnetic field is carried along and is amplified considerably in the process, reaching μG levels for reasonable values of the initial ratio of magnetic to thermal energy density.

Magnetic fields in young galaxies due to the cross-helicity effect

It is shown that the cross-helicity effect facilitates rapid growth of the large scale magnetic field in young galaxies. This field then acts as a seed for the standard αΩ-type dynamo at later stages. This mechanism may be responsible for the relatively strong magnetic fields observed in young high redshift galaxies.

Magnetic fields in star-forming galaxies at low and high redshifts

Magnetic fields in nearby galaxies are amplified and structured by compressing and shearing gas flows and by dynamo action. Large-scale coherent fields can be expected in young galaxies after several 10yr, while turbulent flows and small-scale dynamos can generate turbulent magnetic fields on the timescale of the first supernova explosions. Frequent interactions and ram pressure in the early Un...

Strong magnetic fields and cosmic rays in very young galaxies

We present a scenario for efficient magnetization of very young galaxies about 0.5 Gigayears after the Big-Bang by a cosmic ray-driven dynamo. These objects experience a phase of strong star formation during this first 10 years. We transfer the knowledge of the connection between star formation and the production rate of cosmic rays by supernova remnants to such high redshift objects. Since the...

Magnetic Fields in Galaxies

Most of the visible matter in the Universe is ionized, so that cosmic magnetic fields are quite easy to generate and due to the lack of magnetic monopoles hard to destroy. Magnetic fields have been measured in or around practically all celestial objects, either by in-situ measurements of spacecrafts or by the electromagnetic radiation of embedded cosmic rays, gas or dust. The Earth, the Sun, so...

Time Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation

Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...
